The Pantheon is one of the city’s most iconic and best-preserved ancient monuments, originally built as a temple to all the deities of the Roman religion. Commissioned by Emperor Hadrian around 118-125 AD, the Pantheon is famous for its extraordinary architecture, particularly its perfectly circular dome with an opening in the center, the oculus, which allows natural light to illuminate the interior.
The Pantheon’s dome has long been the largest ever built and remains a masterpiece of engineering. Today, the Pantheon is a Christian church, dedicated to Santa Maria ad Martyres, and is also the burial place of artists and royalty, including Raphael and several Italian kings.
