Castel Sant’Angelo, originally known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, is a historic monument located on the banks of the Tiber in Rome. Built in the 2nd century AD by order of the Emperor Hadrian as his tomb, it has undergone numerous changes over the centuries, becoming a fortress, a castle, and finally a museum. It is famous for its imposing architecture and its role in the defense of the city, often used by the popes as a refuge during crises. The castle takes its name from the appearance of the Archangel Michael on its summit, an event that, according to legend, symbolized the end of a plague in Rome.
