Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, located on the Esquiline Hill. Founded in the 4th century, it is famous for its extraordinary architectural beauty and for its 5th-century early Christian mosaics, which tell biblical stories. The basilica harmoniously combines early Christian, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque elements, hosting works by artists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who is buried here. It is an important center of Marian worship, also known for the “Miracle of the Snow”, commemorated every year on August 5 with an evocative celebration.
